Excellence Without a Soul, a book written by a Harvard professor, reveals that just focusing on good grades will produce many brilliant persons without ____, the ability to be in others’ shoes.
be in others’ shoes - 名詞與同位語的對應關係
the ability to be in others’ shoes
be in someone’s shoes 能夠理解他人的感受與處境,就是 empathy(同理心、同理能力)。
Excellence Without a Soul, a book written by a Harvard professor, reveals that just focusing on good grades will produce many brilliant persons without empathy, the ability to be in others’ shoes.
句中的 the ability to be in others’ shoes 是 empathy 的補充說明,兩者形成同位語關係:
empathy = the ability to be in others’ shoes
1. without + 名詞
- without empathy
缺乏道德 - without understanding others
empathy, the ability to be in others’ shoes
其中 the ability to be in others’ shoes 說明 empathy 的具體意義。
3. 固定片語 be in someone’s shoes
be in someone’s shoes
If people want to have the courage to meet the demands of reality, they should have ____, a firm adherence to a moral code of completeness.
a firm adherence to a moral code of completeness
If people want to have the courage to meet the demands of reality, they should have ____, a firm adherence to a moral code of completeness.
逗號後的 a firm adherence to a moral code of completeness 是前面空格的同位語,用來進一步解釋空格中的名詞。
- want to have:想要具備
- have the courage to + 原形動詞:有勇氣做……
- have the courage to meet:有勇氣面對
- meet the demands of reality:面對現實的要求
- should have + 名詞:應該具備……
- integrity, a firm adherence...
To get a second degree in medicine sponsored by the government, one needs to cater to the imbalance between city and country, and to be willing to walk the extra mile for the ____.
- imbalance between A and B:A 與 B 之間的不平衡
- the rich:有錢人
- the poor:窮人
- the elderly:老年人
to be willing to walk the extra mile for the ____.
cater to the imbalance between city and country
To get a second degree in medicine sponsored by the government, one needs to cater to the imbalance between city and country, and to be willing to walk the extra mile for the underprivileged.
(A) underweight
On January 7th David Bennett became the first person to have a heart ____ successfully into him from a pig, though he survived two months only. This kind of procedure is also known as xenotransplantation.
have a heart implanted into him
- have:使、接受
- a heart:受詞
- into him:植入他體內
On January 7th David Bennett became the first person to have a heart ____ successfully into him from a pig, though he survived two months only.
句中 a heart ____ into him from a pig 表示「一顆來自豬的心臟被植入他體內」。
- have one’s teeth cleaned
修車;使車子被修理 - have a heart implanted
This kind of procedure is also known as xenotransplantation.
(A) implemented
- implement a policy
實施政策 - implement a plan
(B) implicated
If a physician chooses his/her specialty on (human) skin, s/he would be officially called a ____.
If a physician chooses his/her specialty on (human) skin, s/he would be officially called a dermatologist.
If a physician chooses ..., s/he would be ...
- his/her 與 s/he
- his/her specialty:他的/她的專科
- s/he:he or she 的合併寫法,表示「他/她」
- A doctor specializing in the heart is called a cardiologist.
skin=皮膚
Drones, the remote-controlled non-pilot flying objects, cannot be used in warfare as aircraft ____.
as aircraft carriers
cannot be used in warfare as aircraft ____
Drones, the remote-controlled non-pilot flying objects, cannot be used in warfare as aircraft carriers.
Drones, the remote-controlled non-pilot flying objects, cannot be used in warfare as aircraft carriers.
其中:
Drones:無人機remote-controlled:遠端操控的non-pilot:沒有飛行員的flying objects:飛行物體be used in warfare:用於戰爭as:作為、以……
(A) hermits
A large number of refugees fleeing from their own war-ridden or corrupt countries to other ones might eventually arouse ____ from their recipient counterparts.
A large number of refugees fleeing from their own war-ridden or corrupt countries to other ones might eventually arouse ____ from their recipient counterparts.
- a large number of:大量的,後接可數名詞複數
A prosecutor should take an entirely ____ stance. S/he should give the suspect(s) the “benefit of doubt” before the verdict is reached.
- take a stance:採取立場
- benefit of the doubt:在證據不足時,先採取對當事人有利的判斷;完整慣用語通常為 give someone the benefit of the doubt
S/he should give the suspect(s) the “benefit of doubt” before the verdict is reached.
A prosecutor should take an entirely impartial stance.
(A) imperative
It is imperative that we act immediately.
(B) impartial
____ medicine is a fairly important branch of medicine which would aid the prosecutor to investigate a criminal case leading to murder, manslaughter, or serious casualties. However, because of its tough working environment, few people are interested in it.
____ medicine is a fairly important branch of medicine which would aid the prosecutor to investigate a criminal case leading to murder, manslaughter, or serious casualties.
(A) Criminological
(B) Forensic
這完全符合題幹的 **investigate a criminal case leading to murder, manslaughter, or serious
Even nowadays, patients of the medical branch of ____, which deals with mental health, are often stigmatized.
patients of the medical branch of ____, which deals with mental health
Even nowadays, patients of the medical branch of psychiatry, which deals with mental health, are often stigmatized.
- Even nowadays:
the medical branch of psychiatry
of psychiatry
psychiatry, which deals with mental health
patients ... are often stigmatized
(A) psychic
A person with both nearsightedness and presbyopia usually needs a pair of ____.
A person with both nearsightedness and presbyopia usually needs a pair of ____.
其中 both A and B 表示「A 與 B 兩者都……」,明確指出此人需要同時矯正遠近視力。
A person with both nearsightedness and presbyopia usually needs a pair of bifocals.
- a pair of glasses:一副眼鏡
- a pair of binoculars:一副雙筒望遠鏡
- a pair of bifocals:一副雙焦眼鏡
1. both A and B
both A and B 是對等連接結構,表示「A 和 B 兩者都」。
both nearsightedness and presbyopia
2. a pair of + 複數名詞
a pair of + 複數名詞
3. bifocals
The ____, as a physiological term, is the round colored part of a person’s eye which consists of two layers.
The ____, as a physiological term, is the round colored part of a person’s eye which consists of two layers.
其中 round colored part of a person’s eye 明確指出「眼睛中有顏色的部分」,這正是 iris 的定義。
Heavy 3C device users should be careful not to be bothered by a condition, an increasingly common eye disease known as fly floaters, which is caused by the clouding of the liquid, a ____-like substance inside the eye.
a ____-like substance inside the eye
Heavy 3C device users should be careful not to be bothered by a condition, an increasingly common eye disease known as fly floaters, which is caused by the clouding of the liquid, a ____-like substance inside the eye.
其中 a ____-like substance 的意思是「一種像……
the liquid, a gel-like substance inside the eye
(A) gum
- dim-like substance 並非自然英文搭配;
Nowadays in our society teachers don’t enjoy the respect that is ____ doctors and lawyers.
- accord A to B:給予 B A;把 A 授予 B
- respect accorded to doctors and lawyers:給予醫師與律師的尊重
the respect that is accorded to doctors and lawyers
Respect is accorded to doctors and lawyers.
the respect that is ____ doctors and lawyers
Nowadays in our society teachers don’t enjoy the respect that is accorded to doctors and lawyers.
(A) adhered to
- adhere to the rules:遵守規則
- adhere to a principle:堅持原則
respect that is adhered to doctors and lawyers
(B) addicted to
be addicted to 意為「沉迷於、對……
例如:
- be addicted to video games:沉迷於電子遊戲
- be addicted to drugs:毒品成癮
respect that is addicted to doctors and lawyers
(C) accorded to

Hunger during childhood can have a ripple effect that we are only just beginning to understand.
Scientists have shown that hunger isn’t just something transient.
(A) transient
(B) transcendent
(C) translucent
A good doctor, in order to protect him/herself, should know how to become like a ____ as if in an activity of moving fast on foot.
- should know how to + 原形動詞:應該知道如何……
- as if + 子句/片語:彷彿……一樣
題幹以「an activity of moving fast on foot」描述「用雙腳快速移動」的活動,明確指向 sprint(短跑、全速奔跑)及其人物 sprinter(短跑選手、疾跑者)。
become like a ____
as if in an activity of moving fast on foot
A good doctor / should know / how to become like a sprinter.
- A good doctor:
- should know:應該知道
- how to become:如何變成、如何成為
- like a sprinter:像短跑選手一樣
(A) sober
- 例:a sober person(清醒的人)
(B) sneer
- 例:sneer at someone(嘲笑某人)
Today, nearly half of the world’s population is at risk from malaria. It kills more than 400,000 people a year, most of them in Africa. But even cooler places, such Britain, have not always been ____.
But even cooler places, such Britain, have not always been ____.
places have not always been spared.
- have not always been spared:並非一直都能倖免於……
Cooler places have not always been spared from malaria.
It kills more than 400,000 people a year, most of them in Africa. But even cooler places, such Britain, have not always been ____.
It kills more than 400,000 people
(A) spared
- spare a country from war:使一個國家免於戰爭
- be spared from disease:免於疾病侵襲
have not always been spared
(B) blocked
- block the road:阻塞道路
- block the entrance:堵住入口
- block the signal:阻擋訊號
cooler places have not always been blocked
He started playing wheelchair basketball after he was left ____ from the waist down.
he was left paralyzed from the waist down
from the waist down 意為「從腰部以下」。
from the waist down
He started playing wheelchair basketball after he was left paralyzed from the waist down.
- 他腰部以下癱瘓;
1. be left paralyzed
- The accident left him disabled.
- The disease left her blind.
- He was left paralyzed after the accident.
2. paralyzed from the waist down
- paralyzed from the waist down
腰部以下癱瘓 - paralyzed from the neck down
(A) parachuted
Polypharmacy, often defined as the regular use of five or more drugs by one patient, is ____ and is expected to grow as life expectancy increases and the global population ages.
is expected to grow as life expectancy increases and the global population ages
life expectancy increases:「平均壽命增加」
the global population ages:「全球人口老化」
Polypharmacy is on the rise.
- Polypharmacy:
- is expected to grow:表示「預期會增加」
Polypharmacy, often defined as the regular use of five or more drugs by one patient, is on the rise and is expected to grow as life expectancy increases and the global population ages.
(A) down the drain
All our efforts went down the drain.
Polypharmacy is down the drain.
(B) up to now
In order for the body to produce a safe ____ response, it is important to control the amount of antigens in the vaccines.
In order for the body to produce a safe ____ response, it is important to control the amount of antigens in the vaccines.
- In order for + 人/事物 + to V
- In order for the body to produce...
- produce a safe ____ response
- control the amount of + 不可數名詞
- the amount of antigens:抗原的量
(A) antibody:抗體

We have no right to be so anthropocentric.
____ 21 ____
a threat similar to penicillin ____ is very real
According to the WHO, a threat similar to penicillin ____ is very real.
the emergence of a superbug—a very powerful type of bacteria that normal antibiotics cannot kill
According to the WHO, a threat similar to penicillin abuse is very real.
(A) abuse

We have no right to be so anthropocentric.
____ 22 ____
the emergence of ...
Many experts fear that it’s only a matter of time before we see the ____ of a superbug—a very powerful type of bacteria that normal ____ cannot kill—capable of wiping out huge numbers of people.
see the ____ of a superbug
see + the + 名詞 + of + 名詞
the emergence of a superbug
according to:根據threat:威脅similar to:與……相似a matter of time:只是時間早晚的問題superbug:超級細菌,通常指具有高度抗藥性的細菌powerful:強大的capable of + V-ing:能夠……wipe out:消滅、摧毀huge numbers of people:大量人口scenario:情境、局勢leading role:主角、主要角色numerous:眾多的version:版本;本文指不同變異型live peacefully with:與……
see the ____ of a superbug
the 後面通常接名詞,of 後面則接名詞片語 a superbug。
the emergence of a superbug
(A) emerge

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), a threat similar to penicillin ____ is very real. Many experts fear that it’s only a matter of time before we see the ____ of a superbug—a very powerful type of bacteria that normal ____ cannot kill—capable of wiping out huge numbers of people.
Perhaps the scenario is happening at this very moment, only that the leading role is played by COVID-19, along with its numerous ____. As the most recent one developed its own different versions, we should learn to live peacefully with all other creatures traditionally considered bad to the humans, instead of seeking to ____ them. We have no right to be so anthropocentric.
____ 23 ____
According to the WHO (World Health Organization), a threat similar to penicillin ____ is very real.”
- 後句緊接著指出:“Many experts fear that it’s only a matter of time before we see the ... of a superbug—a very powerful type of bacteria that normal ... cannot kill...”(許多專家擔心,出現一般藥物無法殺死的『超級細菌』只是時間早晚的問題)。
- (A) prescriptions(名詞,處方、處方藥、開處方)【正確】
- 字義解析:源自動詞 prescribe(開藥方、指示)。

We have no right to be so anthropocentric.
____ 24 ____
Perhaps the scenario is happening at this very moment, only that the leading role is played by COVID-19, along with its numerous ____.
As the most recent one developed its own different versions
- similar to:類似於
- matter of time:時間早晚的問題
- huge numbers of people:大量人口
COVID-19, along with its numerous ____.
其中:
- its 是所有格代名詞,指 COVID-19;
- numerous 意為「許多的」,後面必須接可數名詞複數;
____ 25 ____
them指前句的「traditionally considered bad to the humans」之生物,即傳統上被人類視為有害的生物。
We should learn to live peacefully with all other creatures traditionally considered bad to the humans, instead of seeking to ____ them.
(A) eradicate:
- eradicate a disease:根除疾病
(B) advocate:
(C) suffocate:
There are around 39 million blind people in the world. But ____ do people realize that perhaps half of those affected by blindness could be cured, simply by removing the cataract which causes it. It is a very common operation in many countries, and only very ____ does the patient fail to recover good sight. However, until recently the ____ did cost quite a lot and was too expensive for sufferers in developing countries. Then entered Dr. Sanduk Ruit, a doctor from Nepal, who ____ the system for conducting cataract surgery cheaply and efficiently.
____ 26 ____
“But ____ do people realize that perhaps half of those affected by blindness could be cured, simply by removing the cataract which causes it.”
People realize little that.../People little realize that...
Little do people realize that...(人們幾乎不知道……)。
- little do someone realize / know (phr.):某人幾乎不知道……、某人完全沒料到……(常見倒裝慣用語)。
- cataract (n.):白內障。
- simply by (phr.):僅透過……。
- be affected by (phr.):受……
- (A) few:【
There are around 39 million blind people in the world. But ____ do people realize that perhaps half of those affected by blindness could be cured, simply by removing the cataract which causes it. It is a very common operation in many countries, and only very ____ does the patient fail to recover good sight. However, until recently the ____ did cost quite a lot and was too expensive for sufferers in developing countries. Then entered Dr. Sanduk Ruit, a doctor from Nepal, who ____ the system for conducting cataract surgery cheaply and efficiently.
____ 27 ____
But ____ do people realize that perhaps half of those affected by blindness could be cured...
- People rarely realize this.
- Rarely do people realize this.
But ____ do people realize that perhaps half of those affected by blindness could be cured, simply by removing the cataract which causes it.
But rarely do people realize that...
(A) periodically
But periodically do people realize...
(B) normally
But normally do people realize...
(C) rarely
But rarely do people realize...

____ 28 ____
However, until recently the ____ did cost quite a lot and was too expensive for sufferers in developing countries.
It is a very common operation in many countries...
Dr. Sanduk Ruit:
who ____ the system for conducting cataract surgery cheaply and efficiently.
However, until recently the procedure did cost quite a lot and was too expensive for sufferers in developing countries.
1. procedure
2. did cost
the procedure did cost quite a lot
The procedure cost quite a lot.
____ 29 ____
Then entered Dr. Sanduk Ruit, a doctor from Nepal, who ____ the system for conducting cataract surgery cheaply and efficiently.
- be affected by:受到……
However, until recently the ____ did cost quite a lot and was too expensive for sufferers in developing countries.
Dr. Sanduk Ruit:
who ____ the system for conducting cataract surgery cheaply and efficiently.
(A) deteriorated
His health deteriorated rapidly.
(B) degenerated
The tissue has degenerated.

That is why the government should ____ to take care of them.
____ 30 ____
In our era of ____ society, the phenomenon of “losing one’s mind” is not rare.
an era of + 形容詞 + society
an era of aging society
A recent film Still Alice focused on a more and more common chronic and perhaps irreversible disease—senile dementia.
In our era of aging society, the phenomenon of “losing one’s mind” is not rare.
(A) aging:
- the aging process:老化過程
(B) fading:

The cause and progression of senile dementia—commonly known as Alzheimer’s, are currently not yet ____ understood. Research indicates that this disease ____ plaques and tangles in the brain. But the ____ after the patient’s case is confirmed to the patient him/herself or his/her closest relatives is huge, and hard to accept. To an old patient whose mental state has retarded back to his/her childhood, the ____ must utilize great wisdom and humor, otherwise the latter will break down first. That is why the government should ____ to take care of them.
____ 31 ____
Even professors or physicians—traditionally considered smart people—are not ____ from it.
空格位於 are not + 過去分詞/形容詞 + from 結構中,且後面的 it 指前文的 senile dementia(老年失智症)。
Even professors or physicians
- 動詞:are not
- 空格後:from it
- it:senile dementia
be exempt from + 名詞
are not exempt from it
(A) exotic
be exotic from it
(B) exterior
例如 the exterior of a building(建築物外部)。
be exterior from it
(C) exempt
are not exempt from it
(D) extreme
例如 extreme weather(極端氣候)、extreme pain(劇烈疼痛)。

A recent film Still Alice focused on a more and more common chronic and perhaps irreversible disease—senile dementia. In our era of ____ society, the phenomenon of “losing one’s mind” is not rare. Even professors or physicians—traditionally considered smart people—are not ____ from it. That is why the government should ____ to take care of them.
____ 32 ____
The cause and progression of senile dementia ... are currently not yet ____ understood.
are currently not yet well understood
The cause and progression of senile dementia—commonly known as Alzheimer’s—are currently not yet well understood.
- (A) soon
The patient will recover soon.「病人很快就會康復。」
- (B) once

- A be associated with B:A 與 B 有關聯;A 和 B 有關
- A associate B with C:A 將 B 與 C 聯想或連結
- A associate with B:A
Research indicates that this disease ____ plaques and tangles in the brain.
主詞是 this disease,受詞是 plaques and tangles。
- is:be 動詞現在式
- with plaques and tangles:表示關聯的對象
Research indicates that this disease ____ plaques and tangles in the brain.
a disease is associated with certain symptoms or changes
因此填入 is associated with:
Research indicates that this disease is associated with plaques and tangles in the brain.

- be associated with:與……

That is why the government should ____ to take care of them.
____ 34 ____
But the ____ after the patient’s case is confirmed to the patient him/herself or his/her closest relatives is huge, and hard to accept.
- after the patient’s case is confirmed:病人的病情確診之後
- to the patient himself/herself or his/her closest relatives:對病人本人或最親近的家屬而言
- is huge, and hard to accept:非常巨大,而且難以接受
-
(A) impact:
the impact is huge -
(B) stroke:
(C) encounter:
the encounter is huge

- be free from:免於、不受……
- retard back to childhood:退化回兒童時期

“To an old patient whose mental state has retarded back to his/her childhood, the ____ must utilize great wisdom and humor, otherwise the latter will break down first.”
“That is why the government should ____ to take care of them.”

That is why the government should ____ to take care of them.
____ 36 ____
That is why the government should ____ to take care of them.
- 空格後接 to take care of them
That is why the government should ____ to take care of them.
That is why the government should strive to take care of them.
- should strive
- should help
- should provide
- should strives
- should striving
- should to strive
- strive to improve:努力改善
- strive to succeed:努力成功
- strive to provide care:努力提供照護
- take care of
- be free from:免於;不受……
- Alzheimer’s disease:
- retard back to:退化回到
Those who prepare themselves for a medical career may have heard of the Hippocratic Oath and its modern version “Declaration of Geneva,” first established in Geneva, 1948, now known for its 2017 revision after amendments and editorial works. Here is an excerpt of this modern version in English:
At the time of being admitted as a member of the medical profession:
I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of ____;
I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due; […];
My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers;
I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient; […];
I make all these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honor.
But perhaps few people have heard of “Declaration of Taipei”—agreed in 2016 but not yet officially approved by the WMA (World Medical Association). This new declaration tries to achieve a balance between the rights of individuals giving their tissues or data for research and other purposes based on confidentiality and privacy rules while at the same time recognizing that health data has become a very powerful tool for increasing knowledge.
According to the WMA, scenarios have already existed for the use and misuse of health data and biobanks. Therefore, the Association came to the conclusion that the major risk scenarios may not ____ science, but may be caused by the commercial, administrative or political use of such data. Therefore, the “Declaration of Taipei” aims to address any use of health databases and biobanks excluding individual treatment and is not restricted to research. As physicians are the primary custodians of confidential health information, they should feel an obligation towards their patients and other persons who entrust them with their data and specimens.
The word “consecrate” in the excerpt is closest in meaning to ____.
- consecrate A to B:將 A 奉獻給 B、把 A 投入某項崇高目的
I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of ____.
其中 consecrate my life to the service of humanity 表示「把一生奉獻給服務人類」,語氣與醫師誓詞所要求的獻身精神完全一致。
- A = my life
- B = the service of humanity
- the service of humanity:服務人類
- be due:應得的
- intervene between A and B:介入 A 與 B 之間

This new declaration tries to achieve a balance between the rights of individuals giving their tissues or data for research and other purposes based on confidentiality and privacy rules while at the same time recognizing that health data has become a very powerful tool for increasing knowledge.
According to the WMA, scenarios have already existed for the use and misuse of health data and biobanks. Therefore, the Association came to the conclusion that the major risk scenarios may not ____ science, but may be caused by the commercial, administrative or political use of such data.
I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of ____.
其中:
- pledge to + V:承諾做……
- consecrate one’s life to + N/V-ing:奉獻某人的一生於……
- the service of humanity:服務人類、為人類福祉奉獻
I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of humanity.
- be their due:是某人應得的
- intervene between A and B:介入 A 與 B 之間
- entrust A with B:將 B 託付給 A
the service of + 名詞
- 醫師的專業誓言;
- 不因年齡、疾病、種族、性別、國籍等因素歧視病人;
- 維護病人的資料與隱私;

I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of ____;
I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due; […];
My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers;
I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient; […];

“I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due.” In this part of the oath, the expression “their due” is closest in meaning to ____.
- give someone their due
I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due.
句中的 that is their due 修飾前面的 the respect and gratitude,意思是「那是他們應得的尊敬與感激」。因此,their due 等於 something they deserve。
I will give my teachers the respect and gratitude that they deserve.
其中:
- the respect and gratitude:尊敬與感激
- that they deserve:他們所應得的
(A) something they expand

《Declaration of Geneva》
I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient.
- permit A to intervene between B and C:允許 A 介入 B 與 C 之間

- entrust A with B :將 B 託付給 A
- be restricted to :侷限於……;限制於……
"This new declaration tries to achieve a balance between the rights of individuals giving their tissues or data for research and other purposes based on confidentiality and privacy rules..."
"As physicians are the primary custodians of confidential health information, they should feel an obligation towards their patients and other persons who entrust them with their data and specimens."
"Therefore, the “Declaration of Taipei” aims to address any use of health databases and biobanks excluding individual treatment and is not restricted to research."
- (A) The rights of patients giving their tissues or data(病患提供組織或數據的權利):

- “This new declaration tries to achieve a balance between the rights of individuals giving their tissues or data for research and other purposes based on confidentiality and privacy rules while at the same time recognizing that health data has become a very powerful tool for increasing knowledge.”
- “According to the WMA, scenarios have already existed for the use and misuse of health data and biobanks. Therefore, the Association came to the conclusion that the major risk scenarios may not [concern] science, but may be caused by the commercial, administrative or political use of such data.”
“Data is sold to partner hospitals for research.”(資料被販售給合作醫院進行研究。)

"Therefore, the Association came to the conclusion that the major risk scenarios may not ____ science, but may be caused by the commercial, administrative or political use of such data."
but may be caused by the commercial, administrative or political use of such data(而是可能由……
the major risk scenarios may not ____ science(主要的風險情境可能**不是……**科學)。 - 「not A, but B」在此表示兩種可能成因的對比。
-
(A) invest in(投資、投入):
-
(B) bear upon(對……
-
字義:等同於 relate to 或 have an effect on。
-

How would big data play a role in the twenty-first century medicine? To answer this question, we may learn something from the forerunners—the Dutch and the Japanese. Though from very different cultural contexts, both collect big data not only to analyze the existing problems, but also to predict the future curve concerning both personal and public health wisely.
It is true that the total population in Taiwan is decreasing, but people are also living longer. Therefore, a lot of the Public Health Insurance payments go to the aging and the unhealthy disproportionately. To stop this imbalanced money drain, we should promote the preventive medicine, reduce bedridden days, and encourage the signing of donor cards—though the last one might be a cultural taboo difficult to break in the short term.
Meanwhile, there is another factor—our contemporary society is getting more and more M-shaped. On the one hand, the rich get richer; on the other, the poor become poorer. This results in their different types of unhealthiness: the rich would get more obese, leading to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular ones, or diabetes, as well as mental problems; the poor, confronted with worsening living conditions, might develop alcoholism, drug addiction, and another set of mental illnesses. Not to mention the middle class who suffer yet another set of psychosomatic problems. Their issues are too broad to be the focus of this passage.
Hence to respond to the future extremes of the health spectrum, the government’s policy to freeze the quota of total physicians to just 1,300 graduates ever since 2008 needs reconsideration now. How should postgraduate medical students prepare themselves to be future physicians? Even though physician training is bound to be tough, and students (candidates) are under constant distress, potential trainees should first brace themselves for the ever-changing world and adjust themselves. Second, they should constantly remind themselves of their original motive—to save people’s lives. Finally, it is advisable to take the advantage of the increasingly internet-linked world, and try to take the initiative to reach out to the outside world.
“Where there is a will, there is a way.” Though this sounds like a cliché, yet learning to articulate stories of their future outposts may lead to a win-win situation. As specialists, or general practitioners, they may not be able to solve all the problems. Yet at least they can tell their stories via podcast (or other social media) so that the outsiders can hear the true stories and apply different ways to help. In other words, they shouldn’t ____ themselves to the comfort zone, or take the city living standard for granted. If they change their mindset, they would really feel rewarded by the help they render to others, and benefit their own body, soul, and spirit.
Which of the following statements support the importance of increasing the number of physicians in Taiwan, according to the passage?
“Hence to respond to the future extremes of the health spectrum, the government’s policy to freeze the quota of total physicians to just 1,300 graduates ever since 2008 needs reconsideration now.”
- Hence:
- the future extremes of the health spectrum:未來健康狀況光譜兩端的極端情況
- freeze the quota:凍結名額
support the importance of increasing the number of physicians in Taiwan
(A) The internet world is an advantage to physicians.
“it is advisable to take the advantage of the increasingly internet-linked world”
(B) A fixed physician number is no longer fashionable.
“the government’s policy to freeze the quota ... needs reconsideration now”

Their issues are too broad to be the focus of this passage."
- 第三段主旨:探討當代社會走向 M 型化(M-shaped society),分別說明富人(the rich)與窮人(the poor)各自的健康危機,最後提及「中產階級(the middle class)也承受著另一組身心問題(psychosomatic problems)」。
(Their issues are too broad to be the focus of this passage.)」,剛好為「為何不再深入討論中產階級」做出合理的收尾與轉折,語意完全連貫,代名詞 Their 明確指涉前述的 the middle class(集合名詞可表複數成員)及其伴隨的各類健康議題。
- (A) At the end of paragraph 1(第一段結尾):錯誤。
段落末句聚焦於「大數據預測未來趨勢(predict the future curve concerning both personal and public health wisely)」,完全沒有出現任何需要以 Their issues 指涉的對象,在此放入該句會造成語意突兀、代名詞懸空。 - (B) At the end of paragraph 2(第二段結尾):錯誤。

What can be inferred from paragraph 2?

What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
Therefore, a lot of the Public Health Insurance payments go to the aging and the unhealthy disproportionately.
To stop this imbalanced money drain, we should promote the preventive medicine, reduce bedridden days, and encourage the signing of donor cards
選項 (B) Preventive care may reduce overall health care spending.
(A) Medicare varies largely between the elderly and the sickly.
a lot of the Public Health Insurance payments go to the aging and the unhealthy disproportionately
(B) Preventive care may reduce overall health care spending.
To stop this imbalanced money drain, we should promote the preventive medicine
(C) We should allow medical supplies for bed-bound patients.
reduce bedridden days

Which of the following is discussed in paragraph 3 as a main factor in our contemporary society?
the rich get richer - 貧者更貧:
the poor become poorer
Meanwhile, there is another factor—our contemporary society is getting more and more M-shaped.
On the one hand, the rich get richer; on the other, the poor become poorer.
the rich would get more obese, leading to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular ones, or diabetes, as well as mental problems; the poor, confronted with worsening living conditions, might develop alcoholism, drug addiction, and another set of mental illnesses.
(A) Social immunity and its relation to higher level of disease.
(B) Social anxiety and its relation to chronic mental disorders.
(C) Social economy and its relation to people’s social behaviors.
social economy 並非本文使用的精確概念;文章討論的是 the rich get richer 與 `the poor become poor

The word “cliché” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ____.
“Where there is a will, there is a way.” Though this sounds like a cliché, yet learning to articulate stories of their future outposts may lead to a win-win situation.
其中 this 指的就是前一句 “Where there is a will, there is a way.”。
(A) cowardice
(B) counterpart

Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information given to postgraduate med students in the highlighted sentence in paragraph 4?
- take the initiative to V:主動採取行動去做某事
- reach out to the outside world:主動接觸外界、與外界建立連結,並延伸自身影響力或提供協助
Finally, it is advisable to take the advantage of the increasingly internet-linked world, and try to take the initiative to reach out to the outside world.
they can tell their stories via podcast (or other social media) so that the outsiders can hear the true stories and apply different ways to help.
-
take the initiative
reach out to the outside world
(A) They should show affection for the world.
(B) They should prepare to cope with disaster.
(C) They should offer to strengthen the world.

Which of the following set of problems does the word “psychosomatic” in paragraph 3 refer to?
Not to mention the middle class who suffer yet another set of psychosomatic problems.
(A) glands and hormones
(B) nerves and fibers

All the following are suggestions to potential postgraduate medical students if they face the challenges EXCEPT:
First, they should brace themselves for the ever-changing world and adjust themselves.
Second, they should constantly remind themselves of their original motive—to save people’s lives.
Finally, it is advisable to take the advantage of the increasingly internet-linked world, and try to take the initiative to reach out to the outside world.
they shouldn’t ____ themselves to the comfort zone
they shouldn’t confine themselves to the comfort zone
(A) Stick to the goals set originally.
they should constantly remind themselves of their original motive—to save people’s lives.
(B) Stay resilient in times of uncertainty.
physician training is bound to be tough, and students (candidates) are under constant distress, potential trainees should first brace themselves for the ever-changing world and adjust themselves.
(C) Make good use of online resources.
it is advisable to take the advantage of the increasingly internet-linked world, and try to take the initiative to reach out to the outside world.
they can tell their stories via podcast (or other social media)

What is the purpose of the conclusion sentence?

If they change their mindset, they would really feel rewarded by the help they render to others, and benefit their own body, soul, and spirit.
feel rewarded by the help they render to others, and benefit their own body, soul, and spirit
they shouldn’t confine themselves to the comfort zone, or take the city living standard for granted.
之內」;comfort zone 是「舒適圈」;take something for granted 是「把某事視為理所當然」。

The most appropriate answer to the blank in the final paragraph is ____.
In other words, they shouldn’t ____ themselves to the comfort zone, or take the city living standard for granted.
主詞 + 動詞 + themselves + to the comfort zone
limit oneself to + 範圍
因此:
limit themselves to the comfort zone
take the initiative to reach out to the outside world
In other words, they shouldn’t ____ themselves to the comfort zone, or take the city living standard for granted.
其中 limit themselves to the comfort zone 是標準搭配,表示「把自己侷限在舒適圈內」。
(A) border
Canada borders the United States.
(B) limit
limit A to B
limit themselves to the comfort zone
(C) verge
verge on/upon + 名詞
His behavior verged on madness.

Born in 1870, Dr. David Landsborough III (蘭大衛), the founder of Changhua Christian Hospital which was founded in 1896 as one of the first teaching hospitals in Formosa, was a British missionary and physician, also a pioneer to Taiwan. Growing up in Scotland in a religious family, he took a boat journey of three months from there to Taiwan, and spent even more months in learning the local language. Going back to England for the last time in 1936, he left a great legacy of love. His son, David Landsborough IV, continued his missionary work for decades afterwards.
Dr. Lan, as Taiwanese nicknamed him, was a role model to everyone who would like to be extremely altruistic to anyone in need. The most famous feat was that he was willing to cut partial skin of his wife (née Marjorie Learner 連瑪玉), another missionary to Taiwan, under her suggestion, to graft onto an adolescent patient Chou Chin-Yao to prevent his skin ulcers around his knee from deterioration and eventual amputation. Though this unprecedented operation did not succeed due to Chou’s rejection mechanism, he still survived, required no amputation, and became a missionary too.
This is not just a touching story to the local Changhua community. David Landsborough III continued to practice allograft, or allotransplantation, a kind of surgery to graft tissues from a donor to a recipient of the same species but not genetically identical. (Though references are now unavailable.) Yet in 1958, another Taiwanese medical pioneer, Dr. Tsung-Ming Tu (杜聰明), the founder of Kaohsiung Medical School, invited David Landsborough III’s widow right after his death in the previous year, to speak the aforementioned story in front of students at Kaohsiung Medical School. The story was painted down by a famous Taiwanese artist Lee Shih-Chiao (李石樵) as an oil painting and preserved at Kaohsiung Medical School as a professional model to follow, even to this day.
In today’s society, if physician-patient relationships can imitate a bit from this model, we might end up with a better society.
According to the passage, which of the following statements is true about David Landsborough III?

"Born in 1870, Dr. David Landsborough III (蘭大衛), the founder of Changhua Christian Hospital which was founded in 1896 as one of the first teaching hospitals in Formosa, was a British missionary and physician, also a pioneer to Taiwan."
(動詞為 found - founded - founded)
- (A) He spent months learning Taiwanese in Changhua.(錯誤)
"...he took a boat journey of three months from there to Taiwan, and spent even more months in learning the local language."

The word “altruistic” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to:
其名詞為 altruism(利他主義)。
Dr. Lan, as Taiwanese nicknamed him, was a role model to everyone who would like to be extremely altruistic to anyone in need.
he was willing to cut partial skin of his wife ... to graft onto an adolescent patient
(A) unanimous
例如:a unanimous decision(全體一致的決定)。
(B) charitable
例如:charitable organizations(慈善組織)。

According to the passage, which of the following statements is true about Marjorie Learner?
The most famous feat was that he was willing to cut partial skin of his wife (née Marjorie Learner 連瑪玉), another missionary to Taiwan, under her suggestion, to graft onto an adolescent patient Chou Chin-Yao...
Yet in 1958, another Taiwanese medical pioneer, Dr. Tsung-Ming Tu ..., invited David Landsborough III’s widow right after his death in the previous year, to speak the aforementioned story in front of students at Kaohsiung Medical School.
- graft A onto B:將 A 移植到 B 上
- in front of:在……
(A) She met her husband after arriving in Taiwan.
(B) She regretted about her skin-cutting decision.
under her suggestion
而 regretted about her skin-cutting decision 本身搭配也不自然;較自然的說法是 regretted her decision 或 regretted having her skin cut。

survived、no amputation、became a missionary是判斷答案的核心線索。
“Though this unprecedented operation did not succeed due to Chou’s rejection mechanism, he still survived, required no amputation, and became a missionary too.”
survived:存活;required no amputation:不需要截肢;became a missionary:成為傳教士。
(A) He developed serious skin cancer around his knee.

Which of the following best describes what the passage is about?
“Born in 1870, Dr. David Landsborough III … was a British missionary and physician, also a pioneer to Taiwan.”
“The most famous feat was that he was willing to cut partial skin of his wife … to graft onto an adolescent patient Chou Chin-Yao…”
“In today’s society, if physician-patient relationships can imitate a bit from this model, we might end up with a better society.”
- 蘭大衛夫婦的愛與犧牲;
- 病童接受皮膚移植的事件;

“Born in 1870, Dr. David Landsborough III …”
Because he was born in 1870, Dr. David Landsborough III …
“the founder of Changhua Christian Hospital which was founded in 1896…”

It is generally known that the job of a physician is highly stressful.
If you are admitted to a medical college, what do you propose to do to prepare yourself for the extraordinary pressures and challenges that lie ahead?

If you are admitted to a medical college, what do you propose to do...?
- If I am admitted to medical school, I will...
- If I become a medical student, I plan to...
- Once I enter medical school, I will...
其中 be admitted to 是被動語態,不能寫成 be admitted by a medical college 來表示「被學校錄取」。
be admitted to a school
what do you propose to do
propose to do something
- plan to
- intend to
- decide to
- make an effort to
例如:
I propose to establish a healthy routine.
3. that lie ahead
the pressures and challenges that lie ahead
that lie ahead 修飾前面的 pressures and challenges,意思是「即將到來的壓力與挑戰」。
I would prepare myself in three ways: maintaining my physical and mental health, developing effective learning habits, and strengthening my professional character.
These preparations will not remove every difficulty, but they will help me face difficulties with greater confidence and responsibility.
